Wallaby – The first steps
April 2002 was the launching date of this model also known as Qtek 1010 / Qtek 1020 / Dopod 686 / O2 Xda / Siemens SX56 / T-Mobile MDA / Telefonica TSM400. Specs for that time were amazing, featuring Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition running with a 206 MHz processor and RAM/ROM of the incredible speed: 32Mb! on a decent 3.5″ 240 x 320 screen.
We can understand that the rhythm of Legacy Devices development is not going as fast as new ones, but for sure it deserves a special place and recognition in XDA.
Actually the name of the site has a strong relation with the UK cell provider O2 who got the Wallaby and launched as O2 XDA.
As for ROM developing there is a XDA Developers Special Edition ROM based on 3.16.52 and 3.17.03 as the latest one.
A little interested factoid about the Wallaby, the first rom kitchen ever created was developed for this device, and it was an online kitchen with toggle boxes and a drop down to chose the base rom that would be used. You checked off everything you wanted to add, and voila… a couple of minutes later you had downloaded your own custom rom.
